Adrien Broner: Requiem for an idiot

Adrien Broner: Requiem for an idiot

By Hector Franco

This April Fools day on SpikeTv Adrien Broner was supposed to defend his WBA 140-pound championship against contender Ashley Theophane. Earlier today Broner failed to make weight for the bout and lost his bout on the scale. The title will now be on the line only for Ashley Theophane. This, however, isn’t the first time Broner has lost his titles to the scales. This is part of long list of mistakes Broner has made in his boxing career. At this point it can’t be taken as a young man making mistakes, this is the learned behavior of a young man who hasn’t learned to take his boxing career seriously. The great former middleweight world champion James Toney, once said, “You don’t play boxing”. Adrien Broner has been playing around too much.

The first time Broner lost a title on the scale was back in 2012. He was set to defend his WBO 130-pound title against Vicente Escobedo.  This was after Broner posted on to social media pictures of junk food claiming that he had no trouble making weight. Broner hasn’t fought at 130 pounds since the bout with Escobedo.

Throughout the years, Broner has always been brash and said things to the media that would be considered ignorant or idiotic. This is nothing new. When Broner stepped up to the welterweight division to take on Paulie Malignaggi, he brought in another angle. Broner was now not afraid to bring personal issues to the public eye with other pugilists. Before and after the fight Broner brought up a former girlfriend of Malignaggi’s that he had apparently also had relations with. Broner as he has shown in the past few months, can’t take what he dishes out.

Ever since Adrien Broner found out that TMT promoted fighter Ashley Theophane may be in line to face him, there has been a back and forth between Broner and Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather is one who doesn’t have the best track record in terms of consistently making intelligent comments through the media. There was a personal back and forth between the two fighters through the media. To Broner, Mayweather comes off as the hypocrite. To Mayweather, Broner is the simpleton.

Earlier this month it was reported that there was a warrant for Adrien Broner’s arrest. There was an incident outside of a bowling alley where Broner allegedly attacked someone over a dispute with money. The bout with Theophane will go on without the title on the line. Broner has agreed to turn himself into authorities after the bout takes place.

There have been videos of money being used as toilet paper in a popeyes. Instagram photos of Broner having relations with two women and now Broner throwing money at a Wal-Mart claiming he didn’t need the change. Broner at this point is no different from Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Broner can be entertaining at times and is no more of a joke than a fighter. Broner is a caricature, and now it is more likely that he won’t change for the better. AB isn’t about billions anymore. Fill in the acronym with whatever you want. All Brainless. Always Broke. A Buffoon. The point is the fighter has turned into a punch line. Until he proves otherwise, those who take him seriously are bigger idiots than he’ll ever be.
