Amanda Serrano defends her WBO title against Edina Kiss in Puerto Rico

Published: July 20, 2017

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - Boxing phenomenon Amanda Serrano (32-1-1, 24 KOs) will step on the scales today to weigh in ahead of her rematch with Hungarian Edina Kiss (13-4, 7 KOs).

The fight will be the second time Serrano has defended her WBO Super Bantamweight title. Their previous fight took place in 2016, resulting in a fourth round knockout victory for Serrano. This time around, Kiss will be coming in with more determination and experience having faced quality opponents such as Heather Hardy (20-0, 4 KOs) and Aussie Shannon O’Connell (15-5-1, 7 KOs), although being outpointed in both match-ups.

Amanda Serrano’s preparation for this fight has been unconventional, with the multi-division champion concentrating only on her mixed martial arts preparation.

Amanda posted on her Instagram, ‘I’m a different breed of fighter I will stop her without boxing training just on my skills and conditioning. There are girls who box and there there’s a few who can really fight and bang.’ Amanda’s achievements certainly back up her bold confidence, being the only female fighter in history to win titles in the Bantamweight, Junior Featherweight, Featherweight, Junior Lightweight and Lightweight divisions. An unprecedented and extraordinary achievement that has fallen far from being given its due celebration. If Serrano were to ultimately retire from the sport of boxing, the loss would be unfathomable for the sport and certainly places an unfavourable emphasis on the role and value of female athletes within it, with undefeated champion Heather Hardy also making the leap to the cage in search of the recognition (and pay cheque) that MMA offers. But, what boxing has lost, MMA has gained in a fighter as skilled and fierce as Puerto Rican Serrano and there is little doubt that her success will carry over to her new discipline.

Amanda Serrano vs Edina Kiss takes place as part of the ‘Viernes de Campeones en Metro Boxing Nights Casino’ series, presented by PR Best Boxing Promotions. It will be hosted in the San Juan Ballroom at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel and Casino in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Friday, 21st of July and will surely be an explosive card.
