Anthony Joshua will defend his titles against Kubrat Pulev in Cardiff
CARDIFF- Unified heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua (19-0, 19 KOs) will defend his WBA and IBF titles against Bulgaria's Kubrat Pulev (25-1, 13 KOs) at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on October 28.
Pulev, 36, is the mandatory challenger for Joshua's IBF title and is coming off a five fight win streak placing him in position as the IBF's mandatory challenger.
Joshua is coming off of his biggest win to date as he stopped heavyweight great Wladimir Klitschko in eleven rounds this past April in London. With the win, Joshua claimed the WBA title and respect in the division.
There were talks of a fight between Joshua and undefeated Cuban standout Luis Ortiz (27-0, 23 KOs), the mandatory challenger for his WBA title but the decision was made to face Pulev prior to Ortiz.
Anthony Joshua has stated that he does not want to vacate either of his titles and will defend them in hopes that a super fight with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder can be made in 2018.
Pulev has other plans, stating:
Should Joshua successfully defend his titles, it will set up a fight with the aforementioned Luis Ortiz who some believe may be the best heavyweight in the division. Joshua and Ortiz would make for a very exciting match-up as they are both big, powerful and both have tremendous skill.
Fight fans should be very excited about the heavyweight division as things are heating up and bigger fights are starting to happen.
