NEW YORK - Middleweight contender, Avtandil Khurtsidze, was slated to face WBO world title holder Billy Joe Saunders on July 8, but a press release by the United States Department of Justice has halted those plans.
Khurtsidze, 38, has been indicted on two counts; one for Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) conspiracy and the other a conspiracy to committ wire fraud, according to the DOJ release. In total, 33 defendants have been charged (including Khurtsidze) "with a variety of racketeering, fraud, narcotics, firearms, and stolen property offenses."
Each of the charges against Khurtsidze carry a max penalty of 20 years in federal prison.
