LAS VEGAS, NV – At the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, IBF Super Middleweight champion Caleb Plant (19-0, 11 KOs) made the first defense of his title by dominating Mike Lee (21-1, 11 KOs) and stopping him in three rounds.
From the start, the bout looked like a mismatch, as Plant was able to dictate the pace of the fight with his movement while landing combinations at will. Near the end of the round Plant landed a perfectly timed left hook that put Lee down.
In the second round, Plant continued to showcase his skillset landing body punches in combination with Lee not having any answers. In the third round, Plant landed an overhand right that put Lee down once again.
Instead of getting up with some form of caution, Lee decided to rush Plant becoming overly aggressive. This led to Plant landing more counters until Lee eventually went down again forcing the referee Robert Byrd to stop the match. The fight was stopped at the 1:29 mark of round three.
The two pugilists showed sportsmanship after the bout despite engaging in some personal pre-fight trash talk.
Plant will now move on to attempt to unify the titles at Super Middleweight.
The next potential opponent for the Tennessee native could be the winner of the upcoming bout between Anthony Dirrell and David Benavidez.
Dirrell and Benavidez will battle for the WBC Super Middleweight championship on September 28th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
For the majority of his career, Plant was thought of as a spoiler providing fans with ugly uneventful fights.
However, over the last two fights Plant has shown that he can be exciting while still exhibiting his vaunted boxing skillset.
Plant may not be the biggest name in the Super Middleweight division, but he could be the most dangerous and prove to be the best in the division.
