Saul "Canelo" Alvarez hasn't fought in more than two fights in a given year since 2011, when he competed in four victorious bouts.
Alvarez, 25, is currently preparing for England's junior middleweight [WBO] title holder Liam Smith on September 17 in Las Vegas, and is going back down to 154 pounds for the first time since fighting Alfredo Angulo back in 2014.
According to ESPN.com, Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) is likely to fight a third time this year after his upcoming bout. The matchup is also being reported to be a regular HBO broadcast and not on pay-per-view. This news possibly indicates Alvarez's plan to finally fight at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds, as he gets ready for Gennady Golovkin in a planned fall 2017 bout.
Assuming Alvarez sticks to his routine fight schedule, he will have a total of three 160 pound fights under his belt before stepping into the ring with Golovkin. The first one would be this December, and the following two bouts would be in May and September of 2017.
