Canelo Alvarez vs. Liam Smith to take place at AT&T Stadium in September
By Joseph Correa
AT&T Stadium is set to be the stage where Canelo Alvarez (47-1-1 33 KOs) and current WBO Jr. middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1 13 KOs) will meet for their 154lb.world title bout on September 17. live on HBO Pay-Per-View.
Alvarez is coming into this bout as the heavy favorite over the little-known champion Liam Smith from Liverpool, England. A win over Canelo Alvarez who many recognize as the top draw in the sport would do wonders for Smith and in such a competitive division it would help to establish him as one of the men to beat.
Fans questioned the decision to face Smith, but after negotiations with Gennady Golovkin fell apart Alvarez was left seeking a new opponent and with Smith holding a belt the fight made sense.
A successful Alvarez-Smith card would help to solidify AT&T Stadium as a premier boxing venue for bigger events in the near future and potentially a site for an Alvarez-Golovkin clash in 2017.
