Canelo and Chavez Jr in talks for May fight
December 15, 2016
After his unanimous decision victory last Saturday in Monterey, Mexico, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr stated his desire to fight the best. This included Saul 'Canelo'Alvarez.
ESPN was the first to report this story as more than just a rumor when Chavez Jr relayed that Alvarez's team had made an offer to him. Boxingscene.com later reported on talks with Chavez Jr's attorney, who confirmed 'positive discussions have taken place.'
Chavez Jr (49-2-1, 32 KOs) recently came into his last bout at 167.9 pounds, even though the contracted weight was 169. He has not fought below this mark since losing to Sergio Martinez in a middleweight clash back in 2012. Alvarez, meanwhile, has consistently stayed at or below 155. A reported 165 catch weight between the two Mexican stars is in the works.
The biggest question would be if Chavez Jr, 30, will be able to make the weight. Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) should have no problem making the weight as he has been reported in the past to rehydrate in between 168-175 pounds. A potential bout between these two fighters would attract much media attention. Especially within the country of Mexico.
