Kovalev-Ward signed and ready to take place this fall
By Hector Franco
Earlier this week promotional company Main Events announced that contracts have been signed by Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward to meet later this year in November. The tentative scheduled date for the bout is November 19th.
Main Events also made the announcement that Sergey Kovalev would be defending his light heavyweight titles against Isaac Chilemba. The bout will take place this summer in Russia. Chilemba was last seen on the undercard of the James Degale-Lucian Bute super middleweight title fight. On that night he lost a majority decision in a close fight to Eleider Alvarez. Kovalev will be a huge favorite going into the bout. Kovalev would have been better served facing Eleider Alvarez to get ready for a match with Ward. In Russia, Kovalev should score another impressive knockout against Chilemba.
Although the contracts have been signed there is still some presence of uncertainty in the air when it comes to Andre Ward. Last March, Ward dominated undefeated Cuban, Sullivan Barrera to mixed reviews. Some fans and pundits thought Ward was impressive in the bout while many others felt that the performance was lacking some substance. Many critics will wonder if Ward will pull out or postpone the bout come November. It must be said that by officially signing the contract, Ward is showing that he is willing to face the best at light heavyweight.
It’s unclear as of now if Ward will take a bout in the interim. It will be a tall order to move from the inexperienced Sullivan Barrera to the best in the division in Sergey Kovalev. It would be in Ward’s best interest to find an opponent that would get him ready for Sergey Kovalev. The promotional divisions in the sport may prevent a bout with someone like Andrzej Fonfara. There is no one else at light heavyweight like Kovalev so Ward will have to rely on his experience against the likes of Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler.
In the second half of 2016 unless Canelo-Golovkin is made there will be no bigger or more important bout than Kovalev-Ward. In fact, Kovalev-Ward can be argued to be a better bout than Canelo-Golovkin. It will be a bout between the best super middleweight and best light heavyweight of this era. Regardless of what happens in between now and November, Kovalev-Ward will be one of the most anticipated bouts for hardcore boxing fans in the last 25 years.
