Jessie Vargas will travel to the U.K. to face Kell Brook

By Hector Franco

Earlier this week it was reported that Jessie Vargas would be facing IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook later this year. Vargas is the current WBO welterweight champion making the bout a unification contest. Boxing fans can rejoice as it seems that there is a welterweight tournament-taking place. This bout along with the upcoming Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter bout taking place later this month will get us closer to one clear welterweight champion.

Vargas deserves a lot of credit for signing the bout with Kell Brook. Not only will he be taking on one of the best welterweights in the world, but he will also be traveling over to the U.K.. This will mark the third opponent in a row that Vargas will have faced that is in the top ten in the welterweight division. In his fights against Timothy Bradley and Sadam Ali, Vargas was the underdog. The bout with Kell Brook will be no different.  Kell Brook is arguably the most athletic welterweight in the division. He is also without question the biggest welterweight in the division. Even with these advantages, Vargas will be the toughest challenge for Brook since he stepped in the ring with Shawn Porter.

Earlier this year it looked like Brook would have to travel to the United States to get a good opponent in the ring. With Jessie Vargas, Brook was able to avoid coming to the U.S. and get a bout in his hometown of Sheffield, England. As of now Brook still hasn’t signed to face Vargas. But according to reports Brook’s promoter is simply waiting to finalize the date that the bout will take place.

It’s still unknown what WBC champion Danny Garcia will be doing for the rest of 2016. Hopefully, we can see another unification bout with the Thurman-Porter winner in the second half of 2016. Once the bout is officially announced fans can analyze what will actually take place in the ring. It’s clear that at the very least Vargas’ right hand could hurt Brook and change the fight. Vargas’ manager Cameron Dunkin had this to say to RingTv.com regarding the Vargas-Brook bout.

“I’m not afraid of it. I know that we’ll be treated fairly. I think I’ve had seven fights there and I’ve never lost one. And I know this guy is a tough guy, but I believe in Jessie and I believe this is the right time for him.” - Cameron Dunkin
