Jorge Linares retains his title with a Unanimous Decision victory over Mercito Gesta
INGLEWOOD, Ca.- World Boxing Association (WBA) Lightweight champion Jorge Linares (44-3, 27 KOs) retained his title with a dominant performance over a very game challenger in Mercito Gesta (31-2-2, 17 KOs) at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
Linares used his hand speed, and brilliant combinations to overwhelm Gesta who never really had an answer for the champion. The win was the thirteenth straight for Linares and sets him up for even bigger challenges going forward.
The judge's scorecards read 118-110, 118-110 and 117-111 all in favor of Jorge Linares who retains his WBA lightweight title and officially notches his third defense of such title.
The lightweight division is stocked full of talent and potential challengers are abundant for Linares. Some of the names include Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30KOS) who is fighting at 140 lbs currently but able to make the cut to 135 if the price is right.
IBF Lightweight Champion Robert Easter Jr. (21-0, 14 KOs) who himself is coming off a title defense victory over Javier Fortuna.
Terry Flanagan (33-0 13 KOs) who is scheduled to fight for the vacant WBO lightweight belt against Maurice Hooker in April.
Each of these fights is interesting for different reasons, it will be interesting to see which direction Linares and his team elect to go in when the time comes.
