Keith Thurman may face Jessie Vargas in his return
Published December 21, 2017
Current unified welterweight champion Keith Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) who holds the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight titles is eyeing a return to the ring and is reportedly close to a deal with former world champion Jessie Vargas (28-2, 10 KO) to take place on April 18, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, according to ESPN.
Thurman last fought in March of 2017, defeating Danny Garcia to claim the WBC strap. This was his only appearance in 2017 as he was sidelined the rest of the year after having surgery to correct his elbow. Everything appears to be going smoothly with his recovery, and it appears Thurman and his team are ready to return to action.
Vargas himself sat out for 13 months after dropping a decision and his WBO title to former world champion Manny Pacquiao in November of 2016. Vargas made a return to the ring on December 15, 2017, against Aaron Herrera picking up and an easy decision victory in a fight where he won virtually every round.
Thurman and Vargas would certainly be an interesting fight if made. Vargas has played the role of spoiler before stopping Sadam Ali to claim the WBO title back in early 2016. Thurman is an entirely different animal, but it'll be interesting to see how he responds to coming off an injury which in some cases proves very difficult for fighters.
