Keith Thurman Vs. Shawn Porter postponed due to Injury
By Hector Franco
It was announced earlier today much to the dismay of boxing fans that the Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter matchup scheduled to take place on March 12th would be postponed. It seems that Thurman was involved in a car accident last week that brought about an injury to his neck where he will need more time to heal to resume training full time. This comes at an unfortunate time for both Thurman and Porter, as both men haven’t stepped in the ring since the summer of 2015.
Fan’s must understand that the bout was only postponed and not cancelled. The extent of Thurman’s injuries are unknown but Keith had an MRI, CT scan and X-rays which all came back negative so it is believed that he will be fine. Thurman will be under heavy scrutiny for the bout being postponed. It was portrayed to the media that Thurman was the reason the bout took so long to be signed in the first place which is simply untrue. Originally, the bout was to take place in December and then in January to possibly headline the PBC’s first show on FOX. There will be many who believe Thurman may be looking for a way out of the bout by postponing but his injury is legitimate and the reason valid for pushing the fight back.
Whenever the bout is rescheduled it still will be one of the more anticipated bouts in the sport. Depending on how long Thurman’s injury keeps him sidelined, there is a large possibility of Porter taking another fight before facing Thurman. One thing is clear is that all fighters need to feel that they are fully capable of going into the ring and performing at 100%. If Thurman felt that he couldn’t prepare himself properly because of the injury, then the postponement in the end will be better for everyone involved. More details are to be out soon.
