LOS ANGELES - Tijuana, Mexico's Antonio Gutierrez is back in the victory column after  defeating Jorge Melendez this past Friday night, in a back and forth matchup on the latest edition of Golden Boy Promotions' LA Fight Club series in downtown Los Angeles.

The 22-year-old Gutierrez was coming off a loss against Gabriel Rosado, who was in attendance, back in June at the StubHub Center. The bout was billed as one of the latest installments to the historical Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry. Melendez (28-7-1, 26 KOs), who is from Manati, Puerto Rico, made Gutierrez (21-2-1, 9 KOs) taste the canvas in the second round and gained the slight advantage early on. However, Gutierrez was able to increase the pressure in the latter half of the fight and did enough to attain the unanimous decision scores of 97-92 (twice), and 96-93.

I came in knowing we were going to go the distance. He was a tough opponent and he made me fight for this win. I came out with more Mexican pride in my heart, and I’m glad that I was able to provide a good show for the fans.

"Chimpa" gets 15th victory

Lightweight prospect Christian "Chimpa" Gonzalez kept his undefeated record intact by knocking out Jonathan Corrales in the second round of the their scheduled eight-round matchup, in the co-main event. With his legion of fans behind him in attendance, Gonzalez (15-0, 13 KOs) controlled the tempo from the initial bell. Corrales went down in the opening round from a Gonzalez left-hook and again at the 1:57 minute mark of the second, which ended up concluding the fight.

It feels really special to fight at LA Fight Club. I was on the first edition when they first opened LA Fight Club, and I love fighting here. With every fight, the game plan is to go for the knock out and I was glad I was able to get twitch this fight.
— Christian "Chimpa" Gonzalez
