VERONA, N.Y. – This is why fights aren’t fought on paper, but in the ring. As the underdog John Molina (29-6) was able to out punch and outwork Ruslan Provodnikov (25-5) over twelve rounds to win a close unanimous decision victory. The scores were 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113. For Molina, this is a victory that will give him more opportunities in the future. Molina has put himself back into the picture at 140-pounds with the win over Provodnikov. This wasn’t an easy fight for Molina as the Russian kept coming round after round and landed some hard punches throughout the fight.
For Provodnikov, this is quite a setback. The fight with Molina was supposed to be the first step to bigger matchups with the likes of Adrien Broner and Danny Garcia. These fights will now have to take a backseat. A rematch with Molina may be, priority for Provodnikov at this point. Most fans would welcome it as the fight was close enough to warrant a rematch and it was an exciting fight with plenty of action.
In the co-feature, one of boxing’s, most talented stars made his return the ring. Former 154-pound WBO Super Welterweight World Champion, Demetrius Andrade (23-0) stopped contender Willie Nelson in the twelfth round. Andrade was aggressive from the start, as he knocked down Nelson in the first round with a great right hook. It was all Andrade for the rest of the bout as Nelson was content with keeping his guard up without throwing many punches. Andrade scored another knockdown at the very end of the eleventh round with another right hook. Another two knockdowns were scored for Andrade in the twelfth round that ended the fight. The fight was stopped at the 1:38 mark of the twelfth round.
The 154-pound weight division is one of the most stacked weight classes in the sport. The Charlo twins, Erislandy Lara, Julian Williams and Demetrius Andrade all reside in this weight division with no promotional divides between them. They need to step in the ring with one another.
