Saint Petersburg, Florida – At the Coliseum in Saint Petersburg, Florida welterweight prospect Mark Reyes Jr. (7-0, 5 KOs) scored an impressive first-round stoppage over Puerto Rican veteran Javier Garcia (8-17-1, 3 KOs). Reyes is a local favorite of neighboring city Tampa and brought a large contingent of fans with him.
Before the first bell rang when the two men met in the center of the ring for the referee’s final instructions the crowd was almost deafening in their support for Reyes. The bout started off quickly with Reyes immediately pouncing on Garcia with power punch combinations. The Tampa native landed a right hand that caused a cut on Garcia who was visibly shaken up. The young Reyes proceeded to ambush Garcia landing a series of his signature left hooks and right hands. The referee was forced to step in and put a halt to the bout. The fight was stopped at the 2: 25 mark of the first round.
The state of Florida is not known for its boxing. However, there is a vast untouched fan base in the state. Fighters like Reyes with their massive fan bases could lead to more significant fights taking place in the “Sunshine State” in the near future.
