Mayweather-McGregor may be closer than it appears

It looks like the potential mega-fight between formarlly retired five-division boxing champion Floyd Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs) and UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor (21-3) may be taking place this year in August.
Mayweather’s promotional company Mayweather Promotions has a date locked in at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas according to the Nevada State Athletic Commissions website for August 26th. This is the same date as the return of Puerto Rican four-division champion Miguel Cotto’s return against Yoshihiro Kamegai in California.
Last month, the highly anticipated fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was announced to be taking place on September 16th. Just last week it was announced to be held in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Center. Canelo-Golovkin taking place in September in Las Vegas was a sign to many that a potential Mayweather-McGregor bout was railroaded and delayed.
There have been numerous videos all over the Internet showing both Mayweather and McGregor training. Although there has been no official announcement except one of McGregor signing a deal with the UFC regarding a Mayweather fight, it appears that this fight to the chagrin of many may be taking place. McGregor also posted on his Twitter that “something big” was coming.
Many are hoping that the date of August 26th will be used to feature Mayweather Promotions’ fighters. Mayweather-McGregor would be contested as a regular boxing match giving a huge advantage to Mayweather. Virtually making the fight into a non-competitive event on the same level of the Harlem Globetrotters or Evel Knievel. McGregor who is a mixed martial artist has never had a professional boxing match.
If Mayweather-McGregor comes to fruition, an official announcement will only be a matter of time.
