VERONA, N.Y - Inside the Stone Resort Casino, John Molina Jr pulled off the upset by defeating former Junior Welterweight Champion Ruslan Provodnikov in a 12 round battle.
Even though the fight wasn't a fight of the year candidate like most expected, it was still a very good competitive matchup, so the fans didn't go home disappointed.
The first round was mostly a feel-out round, followed by a second round full of action in which both fighters landed effective shots on each other while standing head to head in the ring.
As the fight progressed, Molina was able to establish his distance by using his reach advantage to find his jab. Molina is known for his many brawls that he's been in, but he did the opposite against Provodnikov. He fought smart and boxed his way to a unanimous decision.
After the 7th round was over, Molina landed a late shot on Provodnikov, in which prompted a warning to Molina by the referee. The late shot seemed to have caused a cut over Provodnikov's left eye. As the fight went on the cut got worse, but didn't seem to affect him in that big of a way.
Before this fight, many fans and members of the media claimed that Molina hasn't been the same since his 11th round KO loss to Lucas Matthysse, but he sure looked good tonight against the “Siberian Rocky.” Molina is now riding a two-fight win streak.
Provodnikov (25-5, 18 KOs) is 3-4 in his last seven fights and had this to say in a post fight interview:
The judges' scorecards were as follows - 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113 all in favor of Molina. The final CompuBox stats had Molina landing 377 of 1,092 and Provdonikov landing 283 of 705.
