Saint Petersburg, FL – Making his return to the ring after a 25-month layoff St. Louis’ Devon Alexander (27-4, 14 KOs) scored a unanimous decision over tough Nicaraguan slugger Walter Castillo (26-5-1, 19 KOs). Alexander looked back to his championship form, as he was able to time Castillo throughout the fight. In the second round, Alexander scored a beautiful knockdown with a four-punch combination highlighted by his well-known right uppercut. The judges awarded Alexander the victory with scores of 100-89 twice and 96-93.
This is the first victory for the southpaw since 2014. In Alexander’s last bout, he lost a decision to Aaron Martinez (20-5-1, 4 KOs) in what was considered a major upset. After the loss, many were left wondering if Alexander would make a return to the ring. At 30 years of age, Alexander looks ready to make one more run towards a world title. The welterweight division is one of the most star-studded divisions in the entire sport and opportunities should show up at Alexander’s doorstep. Fighters such as Keith Thurman, Errol Spence, Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter could all be potential future opponents for the St. Louis southpaw.
The main supporting undercard bout featured welterweight prospect Miguel Cruz (17-0, 11 KOs) won a unanimous decision over David Grayton (15-2-1, 11 KOs). The scores were 96-93 by all three judges with Cruz scoring a knockdown in the sixth round.
