REPORT: Srisaket Sor Rungvisai to face Juan Francisco Estrada
Published: October 12, 2017
Those who were looking for a second helping of Super Flyweight (115) action may have gotten their wish. Zanfer Promotions earlier today announced on social media platform Twitter that WBC super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (44-4-1, 40 KOs) will be defending his title against his number one contender Juan Francisco Estrada (36-2, 25 KOs) this upcoming February 24th.
The bout will likely take place in the Los Angeles, California area and serve as the main event to the sequel of the highly successful ‘SuperFly’ show that took place this past September. On the show, Estrada won a razor-thin unanimous decision over former champion Carlos Cuadras (36-2-1, 27 KOs). Estrada was able to score a knockdown in the tenth round to secure the victory on all three judges scorecards. With the win, Estrada became the number one contender for the WBC super flyweight title.
That same night Rungvisai scored a devastating fourth-round knockout over former pound-for-pound king Roman Gonzalez (46-2, 38 KOs) in their highly anticipated rematch. The Thai fighter dominated Gonzalez from the beginning landing the harder punches consistently throughout the bout. Rungvisai landed a perfectly placed right hook in the fourth-round to put an end to the reign of Gonzalez.
Both Rungvisai and Estrada share two critical common opponents in Gonzalez and Cuadras. In 2012, Estrada faced Gonzalez in a fight of the year contender and lost a unanimous decision. The bout took place in the light flyweight (108) division for Gonzalez’s title. Rungvisai had similar luck against Cuadras in 2014 losing a technical decision after the fight was stopped because of a cut over Cuadras’ left eye.
The super flyweight division continues to prove to be one of boxing’s elite divisions. Rungvisai-Estrada is not likely to disappoint and provide action throughout the bout. If Rungvisai-Estrada is any indication ‘SuperFly 2’ will be just as excellent as the original.
