INGLEWOOD, CA – At The Forum in Inglewood, California WBA and Ring Magazine lightweight (135) champion Jorge Linares (43-3, 27 KOs) defeated England’s Luke Campbell (17-2, 14 KOs) with a close split decision. The bout started off well for Linares whose hand speed and ability to vary his attack allowed him to land body shots and right hands on Campbell. In the second round, Linares scored a knockdown with a right hand in a three-punch combination sequence. The right hand caused a cut under the right eye for Campbell making it the first time he had been cut in his career.
Many may have assumed that it would only be a matter of time until Linares stopped Campbell, however, the former Olympic gold medalist showed that he had more skill and resilience than many expected. As the rounds went on Campbell, begin to land right hooks and right jabs while evading many of Linares’ attacks. The championship rounds could have been scored for either man giving him the lead by a point or two. When the judge's scorecards were read, it was no surprise that the judges came to a split decision. The scorecards were 115-113 for Campbell, 115-112, and 114-113 for Linares. The knockdown in the second round proved to be the difference maker in the scoring of the bout. The CompuBox punch stats showed how close the fight was as the men were only separated by one punch in total punches landed. Linares landed 140 out of 414 punches at a 34 percent connect rate. Campbell landed 141 out of 524 punches at a 27 percent connect rate.
There will be many that will argue that Campbell deserves a rematch against Linares. However, most will be looking forward to seeing Linares take on Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) for lightweight supremacy. Even in defeat, Campbell’s stock has been raised as a result of how he performed against Linares. Fans will be looking forward to seeing him in the ring again possibly against some of his fellow countrymen in the United Kingdom.
