Shawn Porter, Andre Berto official for April
March 6, 2017
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - As officially announced this past Saturday during the welterweight showdown between Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia, Andre Berto and Shawn Porter will face off on April 22, at the Barclays Center on Showtime Championship Boxing.
Poter, 29, is coming off a competitive loss to newly unified world title holder, Keith Thurman, in June of last year, while Berto (31-4, 24 KOs) is coming off a dramatic knockout victory against Victor Ortiz. The bout will be a WBC welterweight eliminator bout for Thurman's title. Stephen Espinoza, who is theExecutive Vice President of Showtime Sports, says this will be a part of what he views as an "unofficial welterweight tournament" for the undisputed top-spot in the division.
Each fighter has been inactive for just under a year, which places them in a common path in their careers. Even though Berto is coming off a victory (as compared to Porter), both fighters are areguabely at similar points in their respective careers.
Coincidentally, this bout lands on the same night as a Top Rank produced pay-per-view involving Oscar Valdez, Gilberto Ramirez and the professional debut of Shakur Stevenson. However, Showtime will not be pay-per-view, which might entice more fans not to purchase Top Rank's production. With Thurman beating Garcia and Errol Spence Jr. getting his first world title shot against Kell Brook in the coming months, this fight will only add to the competitiveness of the 147 pound division which is still searching for an undisputed king after the retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
