The hype train begins for Charles Martin-Anthony Joshua

The hype train begins for Charles Martin-Anthony Joshua

By Hector Franco

On April 9th at the 02 Arena in London, England boxing fans will witness a heavyweight title fight between two young heavyweights. Recently crowned IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (23-0-1 with 21 knockouts) will make his first title defense against British Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua (15-0 with 15 knockouts).

The bout is highly anticipated, as both fighters are unknown commodities. Joshua has been heavily hyped since the start of his professional career. His last bout with Dillian Whyte showed undoubtedly that Joshua is the biggest up and coming star in the boxing game. The fight drew over 17,000 in attendance and over 400,000 in PPV buys in the United Kingdom. These are the kinds of numbers that only a few in the sport of boxing can pull off. Now it is up to him to show that the popularity is only one part of the Anthony Joshua equation.

Charles Martin may have more to prove in this bout than Anthony Joshua. Before he won his title against Vyacheslav Glazkov in January of this year, Martin was a relative unknown in the sport. Even after the victory over Glazkov, there were more questions on Martin then answers. Martin won the title on a technicality after Glazkov injured his leg in the third round and could no longer continue. The only attribute of note that Martin has is his high knockout ratio on his record.

Earlier today “The Gloves Are Off” television special was released on the Internet for all boxing fans to view.  The show is similar to HBO’s faceoff, but is done in a much more intimate setting. Quite frankly, “The Gloves Are Off” specials are much better than almost any faceoff that HBO has produced. The have produced classic episodes with the likes of Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua himself. After viewing this episode with Joshua and Martin, fans can began getting on the hype train.  It's only a few more week until the two heavyweights meet in the ring on April 9th.
