Thurman-Porter: The beginning of finding the next great welterweight

Thurman-Porter: The beginning of finding the next great welterweight

The kick-off press conference for the Keith Thurman-Shawn Porter welterweight match-up took place in New York this Tuesday. In what started off as a friendly presser turned intense as the stakes of the bout became more apparent. Thurman-Porter was originally set to take place this past March but was ultimately postponed due to Thurman suffering an injury in a car accident. Many fans doubted that the injury was legitimate. Even going as far as to question whether Thurman really wanted to fight Porter. These assumptions can be put to rest, as the fight will take place on June 25th.

It may have been a blessing in disguise that the bout was postponed. Instead of taking place in Connecticut, the bout will take place in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center. The Brooklyn area and the Barclays Center wants to have boxing take place at the arena. It’s a perfect venue for a fight of this magnitude. Thurman at the press conference seemed to be satisfied with the change in scenery.

“Barclays Center makes this a big fight. We get to promote here in New York City. New York is a fight town. My favorite fighter of all time, Mike Tyson, is from Brooklyn. This just happened to work out for the best.” - Keith Thurman

This fight will hopefully signify the beginning of a trend between the top welterweights. Fans need the top welterweights to step into the ring with one another. There are so many talented fighters in the division that the top spot could constantly change from fight to fight. Thurman knows what is at stake in his fight with Shawn Porter and the implications it has for the rest of the division. All eyes will be on them on June 25th.

“One fight at a time. I want to stay at the top by grabbing another belt. I’m going to show that I’m the big dog at 147 pounds.” - Keith Thurman

For Porter, this has been an opportunity he has been waiting for, for years. Porter until he met Kell Brook in 2014 was the IBF welterweight champion. Since then he has wanted an opportunity to get back at the top of the division. By the time Porter steps into the ring against Keith Thurman, it will have been a year since he last stepped inside the squared circle. To alleviate the threat of being rusty, Porter and his team decided to take an exhibition bout in March that was televised on Facebook. Whether this proved to help Porter is debatable, but it’s clear that Porter is more than ready for Thurman.

“This is forming to be a big fight, one of those fights that we’ve looked forward to since we were kids.” - Shawn Porter

Thurman-Porter could turn out to be a great fight. Fans may be witnessing the beginning of a great rivalry and possibly the first fight in what could turn into a series of fights. Both men are coming into the ring with something to prove. Many questions will be answered on June 25th. If both fighters come into the ring with the mentality to put on a great performance, fans will be treated to a great night of boxing.

“I have a guy next to me who is challenging me more than ever. Me and Keith Thurman are going to put on a show. Everything you talked about, you’re going to get it.” - Shawn Porter
