Vasyl Lomachenko to fight Nicholas Walters says Bob Arum
By Joseph Correa
Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum says a fight between WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (5-1, 3 KOs) and former WBA super featherweight champion Nicholas “Axe Man” Walters (26-0-1, 21 KOs) is made, and will happen once a network is found to televise the fight.
The interview was conducted by Fighthype and confirms that the bout is indeed in the works.
This match up is a very intriguing one to say the least. Lomachenko is viewed as on of the most talented and well-rounded fighter's in the world and Nicholas Walters also one of the best, poses a huge threat to anyone in with his punching power and underrated boxing skills.
Lomachenko is coming off of a 10th round knockout win over Romulo Koasicha where he dominated the fight from start to finish defending his WBO title for the third time since winning it over Gary Russell Jr. in 2014 via 12 round decision. Lomachenko would have to move up in weight for this fight which increases the risk in the fight against Walters. Lomachenko's only loss came against a bigger man in Orlando Salido back in 2014.
Walters is coming off of a controversial draw with Jason Sosa this past December in a fight which many fans and ringside observers felt he won clearly. Walters fought Sosa's fight and paid for it. It was clear he was the better man but rather than using his superior boxing skills Walters decided to stand in the pocket and trade making it a "phone booth fight" and the judges apparently did not see an advantage for either man and saw fit to score the fight even.
It will be very interesting to see if the fight between Lomachenko and Walters will indeed be finalized as on paper it makes for an excellent match up between two of the best in the world. Boxing fans should be excited at the news and networks should be quick to jump on this one.
2016 is going to be a great year for the sport of boxing and fights like this confirm that.
