Victor Ortiz vs. Andre Berto rematch in April
By Daniel Zaldivar
One of the best, if not the best fights of 2011 was held in Mashantucket, Connecticut at the Foxwoods Resort. This was almost five years ago and Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto will once again meet in a rematch on a Premier Boxing Champions' card on April 30.
This second bout should have happened in 2012, however, Berto failed a pre-fight drug exam where he tested positive for a banned steroid. Subsequently, the planned rematch was scrapped and Ortiz (31-5, 24 KOs) instead went with Josesito Lopez where he suffered a broken jaw and ended up quitting in the corner. Ortiz, who was born in Garden City, Kansas, had fought and lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. before making it two in a row against Lopez.
Berto (30-4, 23 KOs), who was also on a losing end against Mayweather last year, has been trying to find that fire he once possessed as he continues his career. Ortiz, in a very paralleled manner has been the same. At one time, both fighters were amongst the top welterweights in the world, but a string of losses really seemed to take the toll on their careers.
Whatever the case may be, a rematch is set for April 30 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. The matchup is also reportedly going to be broadcasted on Fox, which exposes more fans to the card. If the first bout is any indication, then fight fans should be in for a good night of action. This could potentially (key word POTENTIALLY) be reminiscent of the series between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, as their styles were ultimately made for each other. A decisive victory for one of these fighters would surely help their chances in landing bigger name fights in the future. Especially within the competitive division between 147 and 154 pounds.
