It was announced today that the WBA had denied the request made by Team Jacobs to increase the purse split amount, in a fight with Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs). The purse split for WBA title fights between the "Super" and "Regular" champion is usually a 75/25 split. The 75 split going to the "Super" champion.

Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) and his team were looking to get a 60/40 split approved by the WBA. In ruling against this proposed split the WBA referenced how long each fighter had been a WBA champion. Golovkin at this point has made 16 title defenses of his WBA title. Jacobs has only made four defenses of his title. This swayed the committee in making its decision. Golovkin’s Promoter Tom Loeffler had this to say to ESPN regarding the ruling by the WBA.

“Now that the ruling has come down I will continue to try to make the fight. It’s a great fight and one I think both fighter’s want and a fight the fans are interested in. Everyone was waiting on the decision from the WBA and it should give us guidance on how to negotiate the fight from here. Gennady is looking forward to the fight. It’s the No.1 middleweight in the world against No.2 and a huge opportunity for Danny. If he beats Gennady, all of a sudden he is at the top of the sport of boxing. Our preference, naturally, would be to reach an agreement.” – Tom Loeffler

The question that is now in the mind of all boxing fans is, will Danny Jacobs walk away from a fight with Gennady Golovkin? Jacobs for all intent and purposes could be the biggest star that the PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) has to offer. Boxing fans know Jacobs’ story of how he battled back from cancer to once again step inside a boxing ring. In negotiations, however, Jacobs does not have much leverage against Golovkin.

It's been made clear that Jacobs wants a certain amount of money to face Golovkin. It’s possible that the WBA’s decision today has made negotiations fall to the wayside. It seems likely that Team Jacobs may not be willing to put much money up in a purse bid with a 75/25 split.

The hope for boxing fans is that some kind of agreement can be made by the two camps to make the fight a reality. The two camps still have until October 22nd until a purse bid is announced.
