The greater an undefeated MMA fighter’s wins the likelihood of getting that first loss looms with every fight. Two undefeated young prospects tasted defeat at Sunday’s UFC Fight Night 88 in bouts that were hard to call since they were announced. Serra-Longo Fight Team prospect, Aljamain Sterling lost a tough split decision to Bryan Caraway and in the main event; Cody Garbrandt made short work of Thomas Almeida.

The thing that all the competitors, both winners and losers can take away from Sunday’s event is that they are all young enough to build on their wins and losses. At 26-years-old, “The Funkmaster” Sterling fought a really strong round one, putting Caraway in an awkward submission that he may have held too long when he didn’t get the tap. The following rounds would have Caraway switch places with Sterling where he was able to take Sterling’s back long enough to earn a judge’s decision for the win.

Garbrandt knew he was facing someone with seemingly more experience on paper in Almeida. Fighters in situations like that can do one of two things, feel out this equally skilled opponent and find a weakness or just go for the kill. Garbrandt went with the latter option and handed Almeida his first loss by knockout in round one. If he was looking for respect as he said in his post-fight interview, it would seem he found it.

If anyone hasn’t noticed yet, the men’s bantamweight division in the UFC is getting very interesting.
