Bellator 163 Main Event Preview
By Edward Carbajal
Undefeated light-heavyweight champion, Liam McGeary will face his most game opponent to date, Bellator: DYNAMITE 1 Grand Prix Champion Phil Davis at Bellator 163. While Davis holds three losses on his record they are by decision, which is a testament to his durability. When you consider the strengths of both men in this fight, it really could go either way for both men. It will come down to how one fighter can apply his strengths, to the others weaknesses.
If you review the training footage in preparation for this fight, it is no secret the strength in wrestling and take-downs goes to Davis. An NCAA Division 1 wrestler he will likely get the take-down and score on the judges’ cards if he maintains control and works cautiously for a finish. He has to be cautious because McGeary has finished many strong wrestlers off of his back after being taken down.
McGeary is 6’6” and has a solid height and reach advantage which could be why he gets taken down so easily, and also why he doesn’t mind so much. The long limbs of McGeary helped him finish two opponents with an inverted triangle choke off his back, not an easy task in the middle of a fight. Even when a take-down is secured, it is like rolling with an octopus when it is someone of McGeary’s build and skill level. The fight on the ground will be the most chess-like portion of the fight if they go there.
However, before a take-down happens both men will be standing and that is where the fight could end quickest for either man. This is where the odds favor McGeary; not only for his reach advantage but his finish rate is greater than Davis’. Half of his wins are by knockout or TKO, whereas Davis has only won three fights in the same fashion.
That is not to say Davis cannot win by a knock out or submission himself. After all it is the fight game and anything can happen but the smart move would be to try and work a decision win against McGeary with his wrestling. However, others have tried that and lost. For that reason McGeary stands the best chance to win the main event of Bellator 163.
