"Do Over" for the UFC Women's Featherweight Crown
The UFC announced Monday morning that Germaine De Randamie will be stripped of the women's featherweight title. Since De Randamie won the title in a controversial decision at UFC 208 she has been unwilling to completely agree to face an opponent to defend the title and get the division moving.
It is no secret the division was created so that Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino could fight at her healthier fighting weight of 145 pounds. Even though she went through grueling weight cuts to fight at a lighter weight and won, the weight cut was visibly taxing. The timing was not great for her to fight for the title in Brooklyn so Holly Holm and De Randamie fought with De Randamie earning a victory with some questionable shots after the rounds were over. It did not take long for the newly crowned champ to seemingly be disinterested in defending the title she just won.
Justino seemed to know there was going to be a delay in getting a title shot and not having lost her Invicta FC title, she knew that fighting newly crowned Invicta FC featherweight champion, Megan Anderson would solidify her position as the true champion in her division.
As far as stripping De Randamie of the title this is the statement from the UFC:
You can read the full release from the UFC here but it acknowledges that this is something the "fighters wanted and fans wanted." It is about time Justino gets her shot in a division she is comfortable fighting in.
