Fedor Emelianenko vs. Ryan Bader booked after Bellator 208

10/14/208

The main event of Bellator 208 had Fedor Emelianenko, whom many longtime MMA fans regard as one of the greatest heavyweights in the sport face Chael Sonnen for the last semi-final match for Bellator’s heavyweight grand prix. The final event of two that answered the question of, who will fight for the heavyweight title was answered in Long Island, New York Saturday night.

Sonnen never left the “Bad Guy” persona alone, he welcomed the Russian former champion into the cage and when the first round began, engaged him like he would any other man. However, the first solid punch Emelianenko landed stunned Sonnen, more would follow that dropped him early in the round but Emelianenko would not engage him on the ground. He would let Sonnen stand with the hopes of ending the fight early in the round but Sonnen would use his wrestling to frustrate Emelianenko somewhat.

Emelianenko has faced wrestlers before and he showed that against Sonnen when he capitalized on a mistake Sonnen made in trying to take the back of legendary fighter from Pride Fighting Championships. Now Emelianenko has a chance to underline his reputation in the sport by winning a title that had the best of Bellator’s heavyweights fight until one man is crowned champion. He faces Ryan Bader for the title on January 26 at The Forum in Inglewood.
