Fight Pass Forethought: UFC Fight Night Hamburg

Fight Pass Forethought: UFC Fight Night Hamburg

By Edward Carbajal

The UFC is in Hamburg, Germany for another UFC Fight Night on Fight Pass. The main event is one for the hardcore MMA fans that have the streaming service, Andrei Arlovski versus Josh Barnett. This is another match that feels like something out of the Pride Fighting Championship era of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). The card is pretty stacked as most UFC Fight Pass events have been lately however the most marketed event is the veteran matchup between “The Pitbull” Arlovski, and “The Warmaster” Barnett.

With that in mind, Frontproof Media will attempt to give some forethought on how the bout will go down.

Both men are former UFC Heavyweight Champions. Both men hold a high number of wins by knockout and both are versed in grappling. Sambo is Arlovski’s grappling base and Barnett is a student of “Catch-as-catch-can” or Catch Wrestling a brutal submission based martial art. Even though they seem to have equal skill, the advantage for one man is different than the other.

Arlovski likes to finish opponents standing; he has spent time refining his boxing and has even spent time training with Freddie Roach. The fight favors Arlovski standing and he would do well to keep the fight that way if he wants to add another knockout to his record. Even though he lost to Alistair Overeem and Stipe Miocic in his last two fights, his willingness to trade could be his way to victory.

On the other hand, Barnett has improved his striking but will likely look to engage Arlovski on the ground because submissions are his specialty.  Of his 34 wins, twenty come by way of submission so regardless of how his striking has improved at this stage of his career, for this fight he stands to submit Arlovski if he does not get caught during the stand up portion of the fight.

A hard fight to pick when you consider both men are coming off of losses and looking to pick up a win. However, even with Arlovski’s advantage in striking Barnett with only two losses by KO/TKO probably has the fight pedigree to pull off the win.
