Bellator Returns to New York City in June
Chael Sonnen (31-16-1NC) is said to be facing Lyoto Machida (25-8) at Madison Square Garden in June. This will be the second time the promotion features a card with Sonnen in the main event in the world’s most famous arena. Bellator President, Scott Coker has been hinting at a return to Madison Square Garden since last Fall at the Bellator 208 press conference and it looks like he finally got a date booked.
ESPN first reported the announcement and while no other bouts were announced, Coker has wanted a return to New York City for a while and recognizes the historical significance Madison Square Garden has in combat sports and in sports in general.
When talking about martial arts in New York City, Coker said “there’s a great history of martial arts in this area.” From Renzo Gracie’s connection to New York City and tournaments in the 70’s Coker added that when Bellator comes to New York City he likes it. “It’s a great energy in this city.”
With the tournaments going on and plans with RIZIN, the card coming to Madison Square Garden has a lot of options to sort through between now and June.
