Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson in December
By Edward Carbajal
Not long after Jon Jones received his suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) it was announced that he would compete against Dan Henderson in Submission Underground 2, FloGrappling’s submission only tournament. Frontproof Media readers may not be familiar with submission only tournaments but the best way to explain it for comparison is; it’s pretty much mixed martial arts (MMA) minus the striking element.
That is pretty much everything you see on the ground as far as submission attempts to finish an opponent by choke, arm-lock, leg-lock etc. If you are new to MMA everything that makes a fighter tap out is what consists of a submission only tournament and it is a popular way for fighters to stay in shape while they are out of camp for any reason. Usually, if a fighter is suspended like Jones was or just wants to compete in a safer sport where less damage is taken, submission only grappling tournaments is a good way to go.
Chael Sonnen stayed active by competing in Metamoris and UrFight events where the only way to win is by tapping someone out. He did this while on suspension and in that time has been promoted to purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It is probably the reason he started “Submission Underground” with FloGrappling to stream these types of competition. UFC Fight Pass hosts the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) and it is pretty much the same thing. The list of MMA fighters that do this type of competition is endless but for Submission Underground 2, it is a pretty high profile card.
Not only are Jones and Henderson headlining the event, it also includes former UFC Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate versus Jessica Eye. Streaming content is becoming more and more available and there is a market out there for everyone, especially in sports. The internet has always been the go-to place for MMA and especially watching some good submission only tournaments. If you are a martial arts/Combat Sports junkie like we here at Frontproof Media are, you’ll want to look into Submission Underground 2.
