It was announced today by UFC President Dana White that the long-awaited return of Ronda Rousey (12-1) would be taking place at UFC 207. Rousey’s return will not be against an easy opponent. She will be facing the current UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Amanda Nunes (13-4). The fight is set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 30th.
Rousey hasn’t stepped inside the octagon since she faced Holly Holm last November in Australia. She was dominated from the very beginning and suffered a devastating second round knock-out loss. Since that fight, Rousey has been largely out of the public eye. There were even doubts that Rousey would ever return after she admitted to having suicidal thoughts after the Holm fight.
Many will question whether Rousey deserves a title shot. Particularly after losing her last fight and being inactive for what will be a year when she steps in the cage against Nunes. Regardless of whether Rousey deserves a title shot or not, the fight will be one of the biggest for the UFC this year.
This will be a huge opportunity for the champion Amanda Nunes as she will be able to showcase her skills in front of what could be the biggest audience she has performed in front of since UFC 200. Nunes is currently 6-1 in the UFC and is coming off of the biggest win of her career. Last July, Nunes faced Miesha Tate and dominated from the start where she was able to bludgeon Tate en route to scoring a first round submission victory.
Amanda Nunes vs. Ronda Rousey will be the headlining main event for UFC 207. More fights for the card will be announced within the coming weeks.
