The weight of winning and losing at UFC Fight Night 96
By Edward Carbajal
UFC Fight Night 96 was in Portland this past weekend and in what seemed to be a quiet event saw some trouble with fighters making weight. Whether or not that had something to do with the outcome can always be debated but fighters on the losing side should certainly be given an opportunity to be heard.
The thing about weight in combat sports is that when weight is cut from what one normally walks around at, the difference is felt. It is also an agreement these gladiators make before they test each other in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). So, when someone does not make weight it can be taken as a sign of disrespect to the person that does. It is a difficult process but if you signed a contract to face someone under certain circumstances than you should abide by the agreement.
Isn’t hard? Of course it is, but a professional still does it. If you need an example, see Cris Cyborg.
Or, more relevant to UFC Fight Night 96, see Will Brooks who sustained a rib injury in the first round of his bout and fought until the pain became unbearable. The final round has him take his first loss in the UFC but before the match Brooks let it be known he takes his job seriously.
Considering the injury, he fought well event though he was surprisingly taken down by his opponent. The heavier Alex Oliveira celebrated his win by giving Brooks some heat after the fight, because of the opinions Brooks made before their fight. It was uncalled for because if you look for a starting point of any bad blood, it started when Oliveira missed weight.
