Tonya Evinger Made Things Right at Invicta FC 22
An error by the referee at Invicta FC 20 put Tonya Evinger and Yana Kunitskaya together again to fight for the bantamweight title at Invicta FC 22. Both women wanted to leave no doubt as to who should be holding the title when the result of their last fight was changed to a “no contest”. After a hard fought rematch, Evinger emerged victorious.
These ladies both wanted to make a statement in this fight and both did. Kunitskaya holds a lot of wins but by KO/TKO but she displayed her submission game in both fights with Evinger. Even though she lost, Kunitskaya definitely showed how well-rounded she is as a mixed martial arts competitor and is likely to headline events in the near future, or get a third attempt at Evinger.
However, the night belonged to “Triple Threat” as she entered the cage with her top displaying the words, “never tap”. The first round had her in an arm bar by Kunitskaya but Evinger trusted herself and her experience and was able to escape that, and the other submission attempts made by her opponent. Kunitskaya’s plan seemed to be to best Evinger on the ground since trading shots with her will likely favor the bantamweight champ.
But just as well-rounded Kunitskaya is, Evinger proved to be a little more and managed to best Kunitskaya on the ground in round three with a rear-naked-choke to reclaim the title.
