UFC 208 to Crown Women’s First Featherweight Champion
By Edward Carbajal
Continuing the New York MMA onslaught, the UFC will be In Brooklyn February 11 and they first bout announced is Holly Holm (10-2) versus Germain de Randamie (6-3). While the matchup is solid, many are wondering why the Invicta FC Featherweight Champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino (17-1-1NC), who has been undefeated for 10 years is not fighting for a title in her weight class?
She has been arguing for the case of creating a featherweight division in the UFC for a while and has even gone through some pretty rough weigh cuts to fight on their cards. Apparently the fight was offered to her, but she wanted to fight in March, not February. The argument could be made that there is no women’s featherweight champion in the UFC, therefore when the opportunity presents itself contenders should jump at the chance. However, the argument could also be made that she is the obvious one to beat at featherweight and is considered by many the uncrowned champion for that weight and her catch-weight bouts in the UFC.
Either way, with Ronda Rousey (12-1) returning for UFC 207 along with the bout set up for UFC 208 it will certainly make for some interesting possibilities for the ladies in 2017. Justino can at least rest assured she will have a less drastic weight cut and likely face the winner of UFC 208. With Rousey back in the picture, regardless of how her fight with Amanda Nunes (13-4) goes, a super fight could be in the works between Justino and Rousey as well.
Things should be very interesting in the UFC for in 2017 with the addition of this featherweight division.
