The Obelisk that is Mark Hunt

At 41-years-old Mark Hunt (12-10) once again did something he was not expected to do; advance in the UFC’s heavyweight rankings. He seems immovable from combat sports and the top ten in the UFC. He also cannot be bought out of his position as was reported prior to his bout with Frank Mir at UFC Fight Night 85.

A lot of things fade over time, explosiveness, power, durability. But, whatever Hunt is doing to stay among the top of his class in the UFC seems to be working. His power is still there, he seems to be improving his takedown defense and what he lacks in submission skills he makes up for with his durability.

He did not address any future plans, call out anyone, or mention anything close to retirement. It seems like the legendary K-1 and Pride Fighting Championship veteran is just happy to be fighting in the class he is winning in. His shot at a title was lost when he was bested by Fabricio Werdum in 2014, then he lost again to Stipe Miocic in May of 2015. Is there one more run at the title left in the heavy hitter? I’m sure he will let us know. If he hangs up the gloves, no one can blame but if he is going to continue; and he probably will, you cannot help but root for the guy.
