Does it seem like the UFC is under promoting events these days?
UFC Pittsburgh did not get a heavy push last weekend and with them returning to Japan this coming weekend, outside of FS1 there does not seem to be any heavy buzz behind it. Regardless if that is the case just like in Pittsburgh (which was an amazing event), the fights going down in Japan should not go unnoticed.
The main event was originally supposed to be Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Ovince Saint Preux but Rua had to withdraw due to injury. Usually, that can lead to disinterest in an event but this is not the case for UFC Japan. Instead, Yushin Okami will step in to face Saint Preux in the main event. Okami has not fought in the UFC since his loss to Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in 2013 but has stayed very active in MMA since. He has been actively competing in the Professional Fighters League (PFL) and fought in DEEP 75 and Pancrase 279 in Tokyo, Japan back in 2016. He is not your average last-minute opponent.
Cláudia Gadelha also returns in the co-main event against Jéssica Andrade. Gadelha has already fought the current champ Joanna Jędrzejczyk twice and lost vis decision and it looks like she is looking for a number three if she can get through Andrade. Andrade is coming off a loss to the champ as well and with UFC 217 coming soon, the women’s strawweight division should be very interesting in the coming months.
Another fighter to watch is Gökhan Saki who makes his promotional debut in this event. The Dutch kickboxer will be competing as a light heavyweight and recently put out a message on social media for the division.
Fight fans following the sport know, usually when you hear “Dutch” and “Kickboxing” in a fighter’s bio it means they have the means to knock opponents out. He faces Henrique da Silva who will be looking to see if he can back that up.
