2017 seems to be the year to kick off a women’s featherweight division. Bellator 174 will be the event to continue the trend with Marloes Coenen (23-7) vs Julia Budd (9-2) in their inaugural featherweight title bout. Both women have faced some pretty well-known fighters in other promotions and having a new belt, for a new division up for grabs should produce a great fight.

Coenen is one of the few women who has gone more than three rounds with Cris “Cyborg” Justino and even though she lost, she has shown she needs to finish or be finished in any fight. Unfortunately, she was finished in her last fight by Alexis Dufresne at Bellator 155. Adding a win by submission and winning a title could be a nice way to forget that loss.

Not an easy task against Budd, who is 3-0 in Bellator and is on a seven-fight win streak. Most of Budd’s wins come by decision and she has been knocked out and submitted in the past. She also holds a win over the current UFC featherweight champion that could add to her confidence Friday night.

If what is at stake at Bellator 174 is any indication, this fight can only be won by a finisher and Coenen can likely be the one to finish. After all, a new division crowning a new champ would be nice if it is done without any controversy. The main card airs live and free on Spike TV Friday, March 3 at 9 PM EST.
